BEECH GROVE LAUNCHES HORNETS’ NET
01/05/2009

Beech Grove, IN – December 3, 2008 – Kicking off the first (mesh) wireless program of its kind offered by a Hoosier community, the City of Beech Grove launched Hornets’ Net today, providing Beech Grove residents, businesses, and visitors with the ability to be connected anywhere within City limits.

Conducting a virtual ribbon cutting with South Grove Intermediate School fourth, fifth and sixth graders, Mayor Joe Wright spotlighted the Hornets’ Net name, new logo and Web site as part of a soft launch of the program.

“Today is a celebration of an initiative that is all about the future. This program is about future generations, the implementation of available technology and focusing on progress and innovation – the hallmarks of a 21st century democracy and a 21st century community.

“Becoming a true wireless community will allow our residents and corporate citizens to be anywhere within the City limits and be online. Whether they are in one of our City parks, on Main Street or in their neighborhood, the program provides connectivity and mobility. We are proud to be the first community in the state to offer this completely wireless service,” Wright said.

An initiative of the Beech Grove Redevelopment Commission and done in partnership with Indianapolis Power & Light Company, Federal Signal Corporation and Unplugged Cities, the wireless program meets the community’s goals of improving citizens’ quality of life, increasing citizens’ personal wealth and promoting community pride and ownership.

“Not only is this service a lifestyle benefit, but it serves as an economic development tool in helping us attract new residents and businesses. As we all know, it takes vision and an innovative, entrepreneurial spirit in today’s world. Hornets’ Net brand and the wireless network within its umbrella is one such accomplishment,” Wright said.

Offering both residential and business plans, the subscription cost for residential plans ranges from $5.95/month (512 Kbps) to $15.95/month (3 Mbps). Business plans will range from $24.95/month (1.5 Mbps) to $30.95/month (3 Mbps).

Subscriptions will be available via online or by phone registration. No long-term agreements are required, with service provided on a monthly basis and 24/7 support provided.

Designed as a soft launch, the month of December will involve 30 selected subscribers who will assist in testing the network to identify final tweaks to prepare for the full launch immediately after the first of the year. The 30 participants selected will represent a cross-section of the community, in order for the entire City to be evaluated. Any resident or business interested in being considered should contact the Mayor’s office at (317) 791-6060 by the close of business on Tuesday, December 9. In exchange for serving as the “early” subscribers, these residents/businesses will receive 90 days of free service when the program fully launches in January.

All program specifics will be available on the Hornets’ Net Web site that will be live by December 15.
