As it celebrates its 100th anniversary as an incorporated community, Beech Grove will begin a face-lift along the premier north-south corridor of Emerson Avenue.

In a ceremony at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Mayor Joe Wright and members of the city's Redevelopment Commission will launch the $7 million project to improve traffic flow and the landscaping along Emerson, between Albany Street and I-465, particularly near Emerson's intersection with Main Street.

Improvements to Main Street will begin after Emerson's repaving and new landscaping, lighting, pedestrian walkway and signage are completed, city officials said.

The section of Emerson is home to a mix of commercial and residential properties on its west side and the Amtrak railroad property on the east side.

Tuesday's ceremony, titled "Tear Down the Wall," will be at the intersection of Emerson and Main. The demolition reference is to the plan to remove a concrete wall on Emerson that impedes access to Main.

"With the Emerson Avenue wall being torn down," Wright said in a written statement, "Beech Grove residents and other visitors who come to our city will be impressed with the new entrance. It will be warm, welcoming and innovative."
