Emerson Avenue Wall Demolition Celebration Planned For Tuesday, April 25 in Beech Grove
04/19/2006
Tuesday, April 25, 2006 will be a special and historical day for the City of Beech Grove. Mayor Joe Wright will address city business leaders and the public at the Emerson Avenue wall demolition ceremony. The event will take place at 6 p.m. at the city's main intersection. The redevelopment of Emerson Avenue is the first step in the city's BETTER, BRIGHTER BEECH GROVE program.
The Beech Grove Redevelopment Commission, along with Mayor Joe Wright, are spearheading the event. The wall's demolition is part of a $7 million refurbishing project which includes repaving Emerson Avenue and adding new lighting, green spaces and signage. The corridor is home to a mix of commercial and residential properties along its west side and the Amtrak Railroad property to the east. Funding for the project is being supported with Federal transportation dollars, the City of Indianapolis and the City of Beech Grove. A virtual drive down Emerson Avenue is available online at

The new Emerson Avenue will provide a gateway into downtown Beech Grove and Main Street, which will be redeveloped soon after the completion of Emerson Avenue. Plans for the redevelopment of Emerson Avenue include pedestrian-friendly walkways, lots of greenspace, beautiful landscaping and a new look for the Amtrack wall. Enhancing the project will be new lighting, gateway structures and welcoming signage.
"This project will bring new businesses, new jobs and new customers to our local economy," says Mayor Joe Wright. "Emerson Avenue is the largest and most high-profile thoroughfare into Beech Grove," says Mayor Wright. "With the Emerson Avenue wall being torn down, Beech Grove residents and other visitors who come to our city will be impressed with the new entrance-it will be warm, welcoming and innovative."
The Emerson Avenue Project is one of eight initiatives presented by Beech Grove Mayor Joe Wright in his 2005 State of the City speech, as part of a master plan to revitalize the economy, improve public safety and create a comprehensive economic plan to bring tax rates down and the quality of life up.
